Parts of Norton were originally established as Taunton on March 17, 1710, as Easton on December 21, 1725, and as Mansfield on April 26, 1770. A bill to perfect the Norton Grant was passed on June 12, 1771.
Located in Bristol County, Norton is approximately 30 miles southwest of Boston, 15 miles north of Providence, Rhode Island, and 35 miles southeast of Worcester. The town is two miles from the Interstates 95 and 495 intersection, and two miles from the I-495/Route 140 intersection, providing exceptional transportation access from all directions. Elevations range from a high of 178 feet above sea level to 59 feet above sea level at its lowest point.
Norton is largely a residential community, operating under an Open Town Meeting form of government with a Charter and Town Manager. The community's population has grown by over 60 percent over the last 25 years. Over 80 percent of our high school graduates further their education, some attending Wheaton College, an excellent liberal arts institution located in the heart of town.
It is located in southeastern Massachusetts, borderd by Mansfield and Easton on the north, Attleboro on the west, Rehoboth on the south, and Taunton on the east and southeast. Norton is 14 miles southwest of Brocton; 30 miles south of Boston; 18 miles northeast of Providence, Rhode Island; and 190 miles from New York City.
